For this sew along with the Fat Quarter shop I am making the Ultimate Beginner's quilt using my Bonnie Lane fabric. I'm also using the solids kit and a blue/gray/white version so you can see how different it looks in each.
The Patterns are FREE and you'll find them by going to the table at the end and clicking to each lesson. Also at the end you can share your blocks and finished quilts
Kit Details:
- Kimberly at the Fat Quarter shop will be making the quilt with the Kit which is a soft palette of solids. It's really gorgeous. That is the kit above. You can purchase the Kit and a starter notions bundle which is also shown.
- The starter kit has the all important seam ripper, needles, great small ruler, wonderclips, pins, the mesh bag, Aurifil thread, Alphabitties and a iron way marker.
- Below I have other notions I recommend to get started. And then my fabric, how to convert to the directions and some other lines I like!
- If you are a brand new quilter it's nice to be able to work with this gorgeous group of fabric so you can concentrate on techniques.
- The KIT which includes a beautiul full color printed pattern
- Sewing Notions Starter Kit.
Cutting Tools
- When you are just learning a new craft there seems like a lot of things you need. Some of them are critical, like the tools you cut with. I feel to be successful you need decent tools so I'm recommending Olfa mats, rotary cutters and blades. They have been my favorite since almost the beginning. As soon as I upgraded over 25 yrs ago I went to Olfa tools.
- The mats come in a lot of sizes. If you are on a budget this medium size will work
- If you are looking to upgrade from your starter mat I highly recommend the largest mat.
- Speaking of upgrades, if you are not using a Olfa Rotary cutter, please get one to try. They are so easy to change the blade, the splash is ergonomic, and it comes in cute colors! PS.. get some new blades too.. you'll need them.
- OLFA TOOLS, there is a combo of the True Blue mat and ruler! Also check out the folding mat, they work SO well if you want it for travel or have space issues
More Tools I recommend:
- You will need a few rulers to start. I highly recommend the 6.5" square and the 6.5" x 24.5" size to start. Also if you have not upgraded your rulers since your first beginner class... go NOW and do it, you'll wonder why you waited so long
- The Dritz Needle Inserter & needle Threader are a handy tool to have. Helps you hold your needle to replace it and if you don't have an automatic threader on your machine, this one works great
- The Thread cutter basket is SO useful! you can keep your Wonderclips or Alhabitties in it, top has a thread cutter, and the side has a magnet for pins!
- Last is a container for the project. I saw these and feel in love. They are REALLY Sturdy (I'm picky on that) and many colors and sizes. This one expands so it can be double the size if needed. I like to keep my project things all together. Since it folds up, I can store it if I don't have project for it.
My Fabric for the Quilt along:
- I will be making my quilt with my Bonnie Lane fabric using 12 pieces, a sashing and extra for a border. Below I'll tell you about my fabric.
- Sewing with My Aurifil Thread.
- And during the sew along I'll be referencing to my Teach me book. If you have the book you can make notes, and be able to refer back to it for many of the things we'll be doing.
My Bonnie Lane Picks
- These are the 12 fabrics I'll be using.
- Plus the light rose cream print for sashing
- The charcoal print for the border and binding.
- And the floral for the backing.
- If you like this idea, get my FQ bundle, which has ALL the fabric in the line, and you can save the blue and yellow for another project.
I think I've decided to give this to my mom, who IS Bonnie Lane... shhhh.. don't tell her.
How to Convert:
- It's really easy to use the handy supply list (download below) to convert the fabrics you are using to the placement in the pattern.
- I laid out my fabric in the order of the supply list. I might go ahead and cut a little piece and tape in place, or I might just use the photo
- My BONNIE LANE Fabric
And one more pretty line!
- Something Borrowed is a new line from my good friend Christopher of the Tattooed Quilter. I am tempted to make the quilt in this too! There are more than 12 pieces so I'd look at a subset of Navy/Light blue/White Or Navy/Gray/White with a striped binding of course!
I'll show you both of my Baby lock machines during this event.
The Jubilant is on a really great sale right now and you might get free shipping to! Ships right to you and at 14lbs with a blanket stitch, it's amazing!
