** Hometown Charms! Block #11**
It is ALL about your corner store! Or the 5&Dime or maybe it's even the local gas station convenience store (that was one of my places when I lived in Belgium!)
When you share your block, tell me about your towns spot to get what you need!
*** Sloan Zone Ambassador team *** thoughts on Good Neighbors!
- Laura - We would go to the penny store and buy wax lips, wax bottles, big league chew, fire balls and tootsie rolls. Fun times.
- Bobbie - Miller's Pharmacy had a lunch counter - everyone ate there - they had the best caramel sundaes. When they closed I purchased some of the sundae glasses.
- Suzanne - We lived quite rural and walked everywhere barefoot in summer when I was a kid. We would even walk on the pavement about a half hour to to buy penny candy, ice cream and soda ,15 cents at the time at a hotel owned by the grandparents of a school friend. They even had a milk machine you could buy half gallons of milk in cardboard cartons.
- Barbara - The little local carry out with bins of penny candy were my favorite growing up! My parents would throw all their pennies and nickels into a jar for us all week and on the weekend we would ride our bikes to the carry out. It was the highlight of our week and we thought we were big stuff lol. Walking out with a paper sack half full of candy. Sour Patch Kids were my favorite!
- Lyleen - We had a 7-11 across the dirt road from my friend. In the summer we would take a quarter and get an Icee and penny candy. Loved the fireballs. We thought we were so grown to walk there and shop unsupervised!
- Kathy The neighborhood stores we could walk to were a regular trip for us as children. We could take $1.00 with us and come home with armloads of small trinkets to entertain us for the rest of the week. In the summer, the main purchase was 5 cent packs of baseball cards that had a strip of gum inside. My sisters and I quickly learned how to flip cards and we soon had a nice collection of cards for ourselves. (The boys were not happy about that)
- Melissa - I worked for the local family owned hardware store. The fun part was setting up the throne and red carpet for Santa. It was "the place" in town to have your picture taken with Santa. It was my job to put all the christmas layaway items on the 3rd floor of the store. All in boxes in alphabetical order. I knew what every little boy and girl were getting for Christmas. It was so much fun.
- Dorris - I have always lived out in a very rural area; there were however a number of small grocery stores near us in my younger days. We use to walk or ride our bicycles to the store (about 1 mile away) to spend our allowance (25 cents). We use to be able to buy 2 sodas and a candy bar and several pieces of penny candies (which were actually 2 for a penny). We also use to pick up bottles along the roadside to turn in for extra money to spend on treats. One store near us actually sold ice cream by the scoop for 10 cents. We didn't go there as often because that cut into our weekly funds too much.
- Brenda - We had a 5&dime store in my tiny hometown. I would go there with just 5 cents and take forever to decide what to buy. I never bought candy, I thought it was a waste of money because it would be gone in one bite. I would buy doll clothes, or doll furniture. Items that I would enjoy for a long time.
- Carrie G- We have Stewart's Shops here in New York State, and there seems to be at least one in every town and city. You can grab and go hot foods (meatballs, mac & cheese, pizza), snacks and the must haves like milk, bread and coffee. What they are best known for is perhaps their ICE CREAM! Best chocolate ice cream ever. You can pop in for a scoop, a sundae or milkshake, and then take a half gallon home. Families congregate there after school events, and the older kiddos meet there after sports or practices. And recently, I spotted that they have their own line of Gummi Bears! (Some may be coming your way Pat!)
