** Hometown Charms! Block #7 **
I really love hearing what towns are famous for! Loads of fun out there in your towns. When you share your block tell me what your hometown is famous for.
*** Sloan Zone Ambassador team *** Famous things!
- Carrie F – Penn State with all it’s games and visitors - I always talk in county terms because we have all these little towns and villages that meld together. Our county area is 1,113 sq miles with a population of 158,000 of which 46,810 are PSU students so it's really quiet here during the summer. But on home football games the population swells another 100,000!!
- Laura – Betty White lived there for a brief time in 1945. She decided that farm life wasn't her thing.
- Suzanne - Dr Joyce Brother’s lived here. The limestone cut from the quarry here was used to build the NY stock exchange and interiors in buildings in DC . The town was named Dover because it resembled the White cliffs of Dover. And although creepy the first electric shock treatments were developed and performed here in the Harlem Valley Psychiatric center hospital.
- Melissa The town I grew up in is famous for this painting "The Spirit of 76" by Archibald Willard a resident. All 3 men were from the town and are depicted in the local parade each year by the same family.
- Barbara - the top 3 things it’s known for is Cedar Point, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Pro Football Hall of Fame.
- Dorris – Kingston - Population (2021): 5,953, Settled: 1792 Nestled along the shores of beautiful Watts Bar Lake, Kingston overflows with nature’s beauty. Once a major steam boat hub on the Tennessee River, Kingston’s waterfront is now mainly used for recreational enjoyment. Kingston was founded in 1799 and is the second oldest city in Tennessee. It was the state capital for one day on September 21, 1807, and remains the county seat for Roane County. Located in the center of Kingston is one of only seven antebellum courthouses remaining in Tennessee.
- Lyleen - Duke basketball and the Durham Bulls, minor league baseball and movie.
- Kathy - The Old St. Mary's Church Cemetery , which is in the town center of Rockville, MD, is the final resting place of author F. Scott Fitzgerald, his wife Zelda Fitzgerald and their daughter Frances Fitzgerald. Best known for his book "The Great Gatsby."
- Bobbie - Folks 'of a certain age' remember stories of Lunt and Fountanne - they lived at big home called 10 Chimneys about 2 miles from my house. They have tours and hold lectures in the summer by big stars. I've heard that many of the stars in the 20's and 30's would vacation there and walk around tiny Genesee Depot. • http://www.tenchimneys.org/
- Kendall - The Big Merino https://www.bigmerino.com.au/about-the-big-merino/ I watched this being built as a child. It was very exciting to have a “Big” something. Built to celebrate the merino/wool industry that Goulburn was the centre of. In it original location (it was moved after the town was bypassed) you could climb up and. look out over the town through his eyes. There was a huge agradome built at the rear that housed massive amounts of information about the wool industry and had live shearing demonstration. Then pop on over the great Billabong Restaurant. The later 2 ceased to exist after the bus loads of tourists disappeared after the bypass was constructed.
