** Hometown Charms! Block #5 **

- Laura - Santa and Mrs Claus being pulled by a horse drawn sleigh is always a hit
- Kendall- The Lilac Festival, established in 1951, occurs every October long weekend. The festival, one of Australia’s longest running, welcomes a myriad of food, flowers, festival markets, music, and heritage celebrations to Goulburn. A traditional shop-front competition runs that sees the main street dotted with lilac windows while the central Belmore Park is green, blossoming and air abuzz with the sounds of live music in the rotunda and the annual Joyland carnival. There is a huge parade along the main street. In years past the parade entries were beatiful! It all finished with The crowning of the Lilac Queen and a massive fire work display. Good times.
- Kathy - Fireworks displays done by the city, and parades for every holiday
- Melissa - Hometown Holidays: When school was out for christmas a few days before the holiday they would show a christmas movie in the auditorium for free. All the kids would come and it was free. Upon leaving the movie we were told boys out the left door and girls out the right door. As we left each child was given a wrapped christmas present. I got a 3ft. tall doll. Such great memories. I believe the organization was the Masons and the Eastern Star
- Barbara - Wildlights at the Columbus Zoo. We would make several big thermos of hot chocolate, take bags of marshmallows, and lots of homemade cookies and spend several hours walking around the zoo looking at all the beautiful light displays and any animals that were still out and could be seen.
- Suzanne - In Wingdale the fire department drives Santa Claus and an eve or two around on all the roads and gives candy canes and a small trinket to kids who come out to greet the truck. Lights and horns going the whole way. The next town over has a house that holds the world record for lighting displays. I have not seen it in person in a few years. It is very hard to get to see it. There are lines for miles every night during the season. (Ill see if I can find a link if you need it)
- Lyleen - Here in Durham there is the lighting of the Lucky Strike water tower at the American Tobacco Campus. The schools send choruses and bands to perform. It is very fun. Also WRAL will light their 300 ft transmission tower. Duke Chappel has a mulit-choral performance of Handel's Messiah. There are many other celebrations for the holiday season.
