** Hometown Charms! Block #6 **
It's time for the Fair... well.. many fairs! I love the really quirky ones, like a garlic festival. Listen to my video for my best memory of a fair.
*** Sloan Zone Ambassador team *** with their Hometown Fairs!
- Barbara - Cedar Point was always a fun place to go and spend the day. We’d plan our summers around how many times we can get there to make our season passes worth it.
- Bobbie - buying a wrist band for our kids so they could ride all the fair rides for free all day long.
- Melissa - The best fair ever is held in Wellington it is called the Lorain County Fair. As a little kid 10 probably I would be allowed to walk from my house on the east side of town to the fairgrounds on the west end of town. It would take me a good 45 min. Before leaving the fair I always bought a bag of roasted peanuts to eat on the way home. Like leaving bread crumbs. I showed clothing etc. for 4-H. I worked the ticket booths. I worked in the donut tent which was a fund raiser for our local school band. I showed obedience dogs. My mother who was an awesome artist won many ribbons for her paintings at the fair.
- Suzanne - There was always the fireman’s carnival weekend. Parade Saturday, rides, games and food. Followed up by fireworks. There was always a raffle and the grand prize was a car. Always fun and a great way to see neighbors and school Friends.
- Lyleen - The NC State fair has so many fond memories for my family. My parents sold presale tickets at the mall for years and then my dad would sell at an entry booth during the fair. My (young) boys loved going during granddads lunch break. They got perks with him around, carnival guys let them ride multiple times in a row and the rock mine guys gave them the rock bags that were damaged for free. NC State University had baby chicks and ducks you could pet. Yummy food and every year we weighed ourselves on the livestock scales! We would go several days it was wonderful!
- Laura - We went to the fair, oh my, that stand up spin ride was crazy. But we wouldn't stay off of it. The bumper cars were my favorite and I won a Michael Jackson Thriller mirror. at a ring toss game, I was so excited to have that, Oh, Goodness.
- Carrie G - I have many memories of introducing our local county fairs to my children. The animals, the rides and the historical displays are all so fun. One of the best part for me was seeing the art pieces entered for judging. Many of my students entered pieces that they created under my instruction, and whether they won a ribbon or not, it was amazing to see how proud they are of their amazing artwork.
- Kathy - The Montgomery County MD Fair celebrated its 73rd year this past summer and it never seems to disappoint. Along with Old McDonalds farm, all of the animal entries, and the household building - where the quilts are entered and displayed, there is always plenty of rides for the children and nightly entertainment for the family. I never entered items as a child, however now I enter on occasion and I am certified to judge the quilt entries.
- Carrie F - Our county fair is also the oldest (148 yrs) continuous encampment county fair in the US. I'm not one for rides so after I've viewed the crafts, cheered the sheep entries, listened to the bands, watched the horses and waved HI to friends I walk up and down the tent area and see how everyone has decorated their tents. People are so very creative. There's always a theme and a grand prize winner. And I always get a Muddy Pig (chocolate covered bacon on a stick.)
- Brenda - The Terryville country fair was some thing I looked forward to all year long. It’s an agricultural fair with all kinds of animal exhibits. Judging and demonstrations. I enjoyed it all. Most of my time was spent taking it all in. Between Livestock events, or when it was too hot in the sun. I ventured into the exhibition tents. looking at all the amazing hand work and creativity of so many talented people. Until I was old enough to become an exhibitor myself it was so much fun to see a red or blue ribbon on one of my entries. From photography to crocheted doilies, homemade jams & jellies. Even handmade teddy bears. I did it all, and more. A day at the fair was not complete until you rode the giant Ferris wheel. from the very top you could see the entire fairgrounds. oh so many memories. Those were the days!
