Today I'll show you what I've quilted so far on the top 2 rows of my Grandma's Kitchen quilt.. ready?

Since I've written an entire teaching book on how to quilt your own quilt, we'll be using that as our tutorial, and I'm quilting my Grandma's Kitchen quilt with my walking foot in rows which is very manageable.
I have my plan in place, let me show you
See page 22 - I'm quilting vertical rows with my walking foot for many of the blocks. This one is perfect for that.
PITFALL/Solution - if you want 'nearly perfection' in your straight line quilting then I recommend marking lines with painter's tape like I show on page 22. Personally i don't do that for blocks like this as I know this will be washed and the quilt will crinkle up and nobody will notice perfection.
I also did an 'X' in each square of the stars. These you can do continuous.. let me show you
follow how I did it with the different color lines and watch my video down below for me sewing and talking you through it
PITFALL/Solution - I don't think you can do this without going over or next to existing lines. We all quilt over existing quilting lines.. it's the way to do it without having to stop & tie off & start again..
Outline quilting can be connected like I did at the top right or you can start & stop... tie off threads.. which is more work for me than i want to do.
Another approach is to not meet where you started but to gradually veer away to echo.
In many of the setting stips I quilted the wave stitch from my Baby lock Destiny II. It's stitch number 2-18 elongated. I show you different stitches on Page 25 and you can see in the book how I used it for the charm star quilt.
This technique is on page 27 and book owners have a private video to watch where I show you how I do this!
PITFALL/Solution - You may back yourself into a corner. Just follow along next to a line to get yourself out. That is where doing some practice on paper helps..
I used my outline and 'x' quilting to enhance these blocks
The center is straight line up & down.
The dark pink star points are outlines 1/4" on the INSIDE on the pink.
Then outlined on the inside again for the grey. Once that was done I came back to add the stitching to the inside of star.
I stitched from the outer point down, pivoted and back up.
PITFALL/Solution - Do you see that 'pulling' on the lower white area. DO NOT PANIC! This is pretty normal when working as you have some areas quilted, some unquilted, so it's an uneven pull on the fabric right now. When you start working this area place your hands on either side and pull it flat, try it! You will see it flattens out nicely and you can quilt the area. Another thing to do is remove the stay stitching on the outer edge to release a large wrinkle.

I could also use the method I used for the kitty on page 64
The block on the top right I'm doing the 'circle' like page 26. I am sewing in sections. The top section I can quilt right to the bottom edge as I will be sewing all 3 layers to the 2nd section when I sew the rows.
**BUT** The section below this, section #2, I will leave 1.5" to 2" UNQUILTED along the TOP edge so that I can more easily sew the 2 sections together for a 'Quilt as You Go' method.
Page 22-28 are my walking foot styles for this book. They are straight forward, then you apply them to your blocks. It's my go to methods for walking foot quilting. Click the photo for a larger image.
PITFALL/Solution - I am not one to do a massive amount of planning for a design. As of right now I'm going to repeat this set of designs by block. For instance the friendship stars are repeated in the rows. So they will all be quilted the same. The wave in many of the setting strips. I'll do the freefrom at least 2 more times..etc.. etc..

What now?
- If you have not basted and stabilized your quilt sections, do that and get quilting
- If you don't have a quilt to work on, get a Quilt Panel
- If you have your unit ready to quilt, do your plan and start!
